The Concept 2 Model E rowing machine, side profile

Pros Of The Concept2 Model E Rowing Machine

  • For one the seat is a lot more comfortable than the model D. There is surely nothing worse than trying to do an exercise whilst in some kind of discomfort. No, we do not want that, we want to feel relaxed.
  • In addition to this, the height of the seat has risen by 6 inches. (To 20 inches from the ground). In comparison to 14 inches of the Concept2 Model D.
  •  Not to mention and the most important point in our opinion. Is that it is much easier to sit on and get off it.
  • The apparatus just so happens to be perfect for anyone who has movement challenges. (Hips or back.) Or is overweight and is having restrictions whatever they may be.
  • As a matter of fact, there is a new low maintenance chain that is has a nickel plate. You oil it occasionally. But, much less than the model D.
  • The Model E is of an exceptionally high quality. It will last a person year’s to come, even when it does many rigorous training sessions.

More Pros Of The Concept2 Model E Rowing Machine

  • The Model E has a longer monitor arm. It brings it closer to your face and hence is easier to read.
  • The Concept2 Model E rowing machine certainly does have a fully functional “Onboard” computer. The computer shows the number of strokes the person is rowing. Even the calories that the rower is using up. It includes the activity time and the distance that the man or woman is rowing as well.
  • The computer comes with three games that may help the hours to pass more quickly. From what is usually a dull and boring workout. Thus, we believe that for obvious reasons this is a great bonus.
  • One of the “games” is so that you can race against a session that you do before. The “boat” (yourself) that you are using is visible on the screen of the computer.
The Concept2 Model Es Force Display On The PM5. Shows How Much Force You Apply Through Your Stroke.

Even More Pros Of The Concep2 Model E Rowing Machine

  • This program is a brilliant way of motivating you and adds both competition and fun to your workout. Really, what more can you want?
  • *The console (Also known as the PM5) also goes with the “Garmin” heart rate monitor.
  • Therefore, it also features a chest strap.
  • Furthermore, there is a USB socket to put into your computer and then transfer your performance data to another computer.
  • Do you want to be part of a team of people who are doing this? You also have the ability to compete. Yes, row against all of the other Concept2  rowing machines on this indoor rower, online. We love the idea of this. And think this will help to keep the workout more fun and keep you going much longer.
  • The rowing machine very easily (You do not need tools) separates into two pieces for simple storage.
  • The Concept2 Model E has a long warranty. There are two years and five years on a large number of the parts too.
  • In other words, you must pay for it once, and it is yours for the rest of your life.
  • You will only need a working area of 9 x 4 feet for your indoor rowing. This is really good

No doubt, you CAN lose weight using other rowing machines. But it looks as if they are not as successful in getting rid of the weight as this one is.

    Hi Simon,
Wow, the Concept2 Model E rowing machine sounds awesome! I would love to get one, one of these days. I saw your review on the WaterRower as well. If this one had the water, I would definitely consider it. Now I’ll have to decide between the two. It’s ok though. I have 4-5 years to think about it. 😉

    1. Simon Watson Post author

Haha ok cool, take your time. And why 4-5 years my friend? And, yes as much as you might like the Concept2 Model E rowing machine, did you read all of it? It is even endorsed my Sir Steve Redgrave which says a lot about its performance, doesn’t it?

Hi thanks for the review. I’m glad I found this because it pretty much covers everything about this rowing machine. I have read elsewhere that this was one of the best and if Steve Redgrave has endorsed it then that’s good enough for me. The fact that this model is higher off the ground makes it even better. I also like how the warranty is 2 years minimum. The last rowing machine I bought only had 1 year warranty. Do you know if this comes with it’s own unique oil for the chain or would a generic oil be okay to use? Is there any other regular maintenance needed?

    Hi Simon,
How will the height difference on the seat make a difference in terms of exercise. I’m new to the area of rowing machines but may be looking at getting one this year. Will the height adjustment mean easier movement or more strain on the upper leg area?
    Thanks,
    D

    Reply
    1. Simon Watson Post author

No, it will not mean any more stress on the legs as the front is of an equal height to the seat so, you will be higher off the ground overall. The actual exercise is no different, it just means that it is purely for reasons of accessibility tat it is as high as the normal chair is Dan, about 30 cm.

It looks like you have a handle on reviewing these machines pretty well. this is a great review as you have lots of pros and cons and even a FAQ!! Pretty cool. I am not one with using a rowing machine or even tried but this post makes it seem easier than I thought. I would still have to go somewhere to try one first. I have too many times bought stuff for optimizing myself and then never used.

Yes, I have tried to include everything in it to enable the reader to make an informed decision before a potential purchase. And, yes, that is the problem people face after they purchase a piece of equipment, the novelty wears off rather quickly.

But at least with the concept2 model E rowing machine, there are interactive games that come with it, so engage you, and, to break up the monotony of a gruelling often times boring workout!

Hi, Simon! This is really a great review of the Conept2 model e rowing machine 🙂 I have been considering for a long time, buying one to my home gym, where I already have a training wheel for my road bike and cross trainer for cardio workouts. It’s important to vary the activities so that the body doesn’t get used to one form of exercise and optimise the movements for it.

Rowing has always been one of my favourite whole body workouts that I can do either outside or in the gym. I spent a lot of time as a child by the sea and had my own rowing boat since I was 3 years old! In the gym I can close my eyes and pretend to be at the sea again, listening to the seagulls screaming above my head.

    Reply
    1. Simon Watson Post author

Thank you for your kind words Zena lol. And yes, you are so right, the body does most definitely adapt to the exercise that it performs, so it is a good idea to vary the exercises.#

If you like the exercises, then you should maybe consider purchasing one and dream away of being on the sea “listening to gulls!”

I like it that the Concept2 Model E is designed to be used even by the mobility impaired. This is good for people who have back injuries who still have to continue their exercise regimen. And for the really overweight who really will need this, this will be perfect. Looks sturdy and as you say will last for a long time. And in spite of the noise I think the pros greatly overweigh the cons, thus, it is worth the investment.

    Reply
    1. Simon Watson Post author

Yes, the use for the mobility impaired element is an awesome added plus as there are varying degrees of injuries/disease out there. Personally, I think that it is well worth the investment, you know what they say? You CANNOT put a price on your health! The noise was only to be considered a minor issue and was only mentioned once by a user, but I thought that I had better mention it, nonetheless.

If Sir Steve Redgrave say it is good, then it should be good 😉 I was looking for a cardio machine for upper body. This looks like a great machine and I jump rope for 15 minutes at moderate intensity and I want to replace that routine with this machine. How many minutes do you think I should use it and which intensity?

    Reply
    1. Simon Watson Post author

Yes Furkan, exactly, if someone of Sir Steve Redgrave uses it for his training then it must be amazing right? And as far as using it to replace your rope jumping, then first I will need to know for how long you do that for and what improvements are you attempting to make? Your physique or overall health or both?

Thanks for the article Simon. I think you covered just about everything there is to know about this piece of equipment. It is interesting to see the subtle improvements made from the Concept2 Model D to the Model E, especially the difference in height off the floor. I can see where that would make a significant difference for people with mobility issues. The function that enables you to race against your previous times is genius, that is an amazing way to motivate people to keep improving. All around this looks like a solid rowing machine that provides a ton of benefit for the user working out. Thanks for sharing!

Well Chris, in all honesty, you have just positively addressed the main components/points that I mentioned in the review. And I must agree with you there on the racing of previous times. Weight loss is about having effective machines that will enable persons to burn callories effectively. The Concept2 Rowing Machine Model E is indeed an effective machine to burn unwanted calories and to lose weight. Furthermore it caters to persons who might have balance issues or back issues seeing that it is 20 feet above ground; this is perfect for persons who are overweight, but really anybody can use it. the price for the machine is reasonable aswell. Thanks for this review.

Thank you for your comment Michael, and yes, the fact that it is higher off the ground really does make it that much more accessible to those of us with less mobility. You do however make a typo I’m sure when you said 20 FEET of the ground as it is a sufficient 20 inches lol. But not a problem.

I find this to be an interesting and intriguing piece of exercise equipment. I’ve found through practice and research that intense, short work outs are best to do.

It makes me wonder about what a short, intense workout on this machine would do for my arm muscle focus groups. I noticed quite a bit about weight loss and I know there are many looking to find out about that.

I, however, look for ways to increase tone in my muscles as well as building endurance. I can see some potential for doing just that with this machine. Do you think this equipment would be ideal for rapid, intense sessions?

Thank you for the awesome info.

Rowing is a great exercise as it gets your entire body to work, (as opposed to a stationary bike which only works your lower body) and it gives you a strong back which is important to avoid back problems later on.

This really seems to be the perfect machine to workout on. Quality really is important, as cheaper exercise equipment is often uncomfortable and/or boring to use. If you have the proper tools, then it will be much more enjoyable.

Thank you for a really complete and comprehensive review of the Concept2 rowing machine.

How many calories do you burn during a half hour on the rowing machine?

      Calories Burned = [(Age x 0.2017) – (Weight x 0.09036) + (Heart Rate x 0.6309) – 55.0969] x Time / 4.184.

Nice review 🙂 I am thinking of getting some sort of an exercise apparatus for the winter months as I don’t like running in the dark nights. I was unsure of whether to go for an exercise bike or a rowing machine.

I feel like the rowing machine is great for an upper body workout where as the exercise bike is great for the lower body. I am more interested in fitness rather than weight loss. Which exercise machine would you recommend?

They are both great cardiovascular workouts my friend, and the treadmill, is the third piece of apparatus you neglected to mention.

What it really does boil down to is which piece of kit you really like to do the most on as you do NOT want to be stuck doing an exercise you really do not enjoy!!!

There are two Concept 2 D rowing machines down my local gym. I use them fairly regularly and they are fine machines so if the Concept 2 E is an improvement – that’s pretty good. We also have a Concept 2 Skierg (at least that’s what I think it’s called).

I believe it’s a Ski based training machine – but it’s hugely popular in our gym and I doubt that most of its users ever ski.

The thing about all the Concept machines I have come across is that they are exceptionally well made. the quality of the engineering is second to none.

I love the fact that you can compete with others because, frankly, the rowing machine is not my favourite as I do find it boring and there’s nothing like a bit of competition to get me motivated.

    1. Simon Watson Post author

Haha yes, exactly Eoin the competition aspect is a fantastic one isn’t it. It will take the mundaneness out of the workout and add an element of fun to the exercise. After all, there is surely nothing worse than when an exercise is not at all enjoyable.

You will simply find a way to avoid doing it. I am positive that you will easily talk yourself out of it. Thank you for your comment!

I am sure this rowing machine will do the trick. It looks like the best you can get on the market.
I haven’t tried one at home yet but I have been to the gym and trained there.

I like the fact that this rowing machine doesn’t take much space in my home

    .
I think I would store it in my living room. We don’t have much room at home.
But it may be worth buying one to get in better shape.

    Hello Simon

First off this is a very good review of the ‘The Concept2 Model E Rowing Machine’.
I couldn’t help but notice that you say it’s perfect for anyone who is mobility impaired and you name hips as an example.
I suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis which is a condition that affects the joints. It’s also a progressive condition, so my question to you is this.

In what way or how would the rowing machine help me to stay mobile in comparison to cycling which I do a lot of just now as suggested by my doctor?

In other words. What are the benefits of switching over from bike to a rowing machine?

I found your FAQ to this review and have to say this perfectly summarise the difference between Model D and Model E, which I somehow missed while reading the review.

Besides the frame, the hight and the arm holding the monitor, there is no difference between the two Models. From my experience, the D seems to have a bit more sturdy frame, but that might be outliers.

    Keep it up!

It is great to see that they have improved on a very good machine. The area in which I felt they needed to improve the most was the sitting position, I thought it was a bit low, now they have corrected that and the machine is now really damn good.

I love the ability to race my previous best times, makes for a more enjoyable workout.

Yes it is a great machine and it has improved with this newer model.

A good review of one of the best machines on the market. The only thing I’d comment on is he belief that the machine will magically make you lose weight. You have to use it for that to happen!! And you have to put in effort.

Just owning one won’t suck fat out of your stomach when you’re sitting in the couch. And when you are on it, you have to push hard, pull hard, get the heart rate etc. I have a post on my blog about this exact point:

and IDK why because personally, I lost more excess weight with rowing machines that ANY other machine at the gym.
Yes, it’s a challenging workout, but you can self-adjust your speed and rhythm and build it up to the intensity you need to get the job done slowly but surely if you are new to these incredible machines!

This is in regards to the noise it made. The author was slightly unhappy about the noise that it made in a small confined space. This was, however, the only negative comment that was made and I fear the gentleman was looking for the impossible complete silence as I fear he may have been exceptionally fussy and it would have been just an isolated incident.

This to me is a great added bonus which will add a social and fun element to your exercise as well as keeping you motivated to beat them. All the while you are becoming fitter and healthier! Big bonus. Gone will be the feeling of intense isolation when it comes down to workout time as you can just switch on “Compete” mode.

If you like the quiet time alone then you simply do not switch it on. The choice is entirely yours.

Hi Simon thanks for your review, I don’t have time to get to the gym and so workout from home with free weights but have been looking for an aerobic workout machine lately. the concept 2 model E looks to be quite the machine. Thanks again for your very informative review, I will look into this further.

There is absolutely nothing with working out at home my friend! A workout is a workout. Your body does not care and it will thank you with an improvement in health. The aerobic exercise is very important for internal health there is no doubt and one of these pieces of apparatus will only stand to serve you very well indeed.

What a great review and very thorough. I remember as a kid my dad having the rowing machine that seemed like it could fall apart at any moment when you got in it. But boy you could get a good workout on it.
Rowing is a great workout and with this review I now need to get this machine to help fine tune my workouts.
    Thanks again.

Yes haha, but you could look at it from a different point of view, and that is one I’m sure most fitness enthusiasts will look at it from. AT LEAST YOUR FATHER WAS WORKING OUT despite what the apparatus looked like.

That said though it was obviously not as robust and well built as the Concept2 model E rowing machine as this model (and the previous model the D), are built to withstand many MANY hours of rigorous training and exercise. Good luck with your fine tuning.

Hi Simon, this is a good in-depth review. I like how you included the review of others, cause I was interested to see what other people thought of the rowing machine too. It’s also quite interesting to see that even Olympic winner think it’s a great machine.

I like some of the features such as the height of the seat is raised, which means it’ll be beneficial for lots of different types of people, and that it’s easy to store away.

I feel like I’ve learnt a lot about the Concept 2 from your review. Thanks for sharing

Now due to your review it seems like it’s a good choice as it has sooo many pros and basically zero cons. I might have to buy one of these in the future for my gym. Thanks for your review!

Thanks for the comment sir! Now this next suggestion does not allow you to compete against the other users like the Concept2 model E rowing machine does, but you may wish to take a look. It is a fully usable addition to what sounds like an expanding gym. https://whatisweightlossabout.com/stamina-air-rower-black-chrome

The rowing machine was one of my favorite pieces of equipment several years ago when I was exercising to improve my fitness at a local gymnasium. The model being reviewed in this article is definitely superior to the machine I was exercising on.

I particularly like the fact that you can do the rowing exercises to get fit and also play games on the computer console at the same time. Great idea to relieve the monotony of the rowing routine.

Haha yes, that is what drew me towards reviewing this one as I thought people might like it. As I have already alluded to it is on the steep side yes! But you do indeed get just what you pay for and you get loads with this brilliant machine for sure.

There is, however, an alternative to the concept2 model E rowing machine. Although you cannot race other users it is duel purpose and is an exercise bike and a rowing machine. So, you get two for the price of one? Here is my review of it here https://whatisweightlossabout.com/buy-the-stamina-15-9003-recumbentrowing-machine-review

You know, I never considered using one of these machines. They kind of reminded me of like an elliptical, the machine kind of “running you” so to speak. For that reason they never caught my attention.

However, after reading your post I feel like I could actually get into it. Adding the leaderboards thing is a great motivator and way to track progress.

I also live in a 1 bedroom apartment so like…storage of an actual row boat isn’t an option.

    This thing actually is.

    Thanks for the post!

AAAAwwwwwwwww well no, thank you for taking the time to comment madam. Yes the Concept is very quiet and it can easily be stored away which is perfect I guess for your 1 bedroom apartment. I too think that the leader board interaction is fantastic to keep you in the right frame of mind for your workout as you are only doing it to train/lose weight and/or get healthy anyway so excuse the pun but this is one of the healthy distractions!

Nothing beats a rowing machine for cutting weight. You throw your head through a garbage put on your biggest sweater and go hard. If I’ve been slacking I hop on a good rower for 20 mins get the blood flowing before I ever even touch a weight.

Personally I’m not a big fan of any machine at a gym let alone would I get anything besides a rower for equipment at my own house great review I could really see myself and my gf benefiting from the model E

I haven’t really thought about a rower but it’s something to consider. I would imagine that it’s good for my arms and legs and that’s always good. Does rowing help with the core?

I really need to get back into shape!

oh boo for the treadmill removal and you should at least TRY to get back in shape matey for you own health benefits. Yes you should consider a rowing machine as they are super low impact and the risk of injuring yourself is negligible indeed.

The concept 2 is more expensive than most of the rowers that are available but as they say “You get what you pay for” And hence you get the interaction I listed!

Amazing review Simon! I’ve only used rowing machines sparingly in the past, but just from your post I can see they’re worth a try in my next workout session. I wasn’t very interested until I saw the games feature. It looks like racing a ghost of yourself in a racing game, only it’s real, and it’s a footrace. There’s also the online compatibility that I think is very futuristic for exercise equipment.

You’ve said this is the best rowing machine out there, but are there any cheaper ones that don’t sacrifice too much quality? Sadly this is out of my price range, which is a bummer since the features in this Concept 2 are too useful to ignore. Maybe a previous model? Anyway, thanks for the detailed look at this machine Simon!

Even though I weight no wheres around 500 pounds, just the fact that this machine can handle the weight load tells you it is built of better quality than the ones unable to take that kind of weight.

Love the idea of being able to challenge yourself with previous workouts or to go online against other people training. Having that ability puts your exercising into perspective and your right about the extra motivation that would generate.

Great review and so far this rowing machine is at the top of my chart for purchasing.

When I go the gym, I use the rowing machine to exercise my abs! I will stand next to the machine (left side) and pull the cable to my right shoulder. Then I move to the right and pull the cable to my left shoulder.

So if you think the rowing machine is only to exercise part of your upper and lower body, then you must try these exercises and let the fat around your abs burn!

This is a good and thorough review of Concept 2 rowing machine. I can’t remember the brand name of the rowing machine at our gym but it looks more compact than this Concept 2.

    Hi Simon,

I found your review very interesting, I really liked the reading! I was just looking for a workout machine to make some exercises from home and to tell you the truth, I’ve fed up of home bicycles and other machines that I’ve seen so far. The rowing machine seems to be a high-quality tool!
Few question if you don’t mind:)

    1) Is the rolling machine good for the back because I don’t see any back support or it doesn’t matter?

    2) Which of them would you suggest for a family including children 12 and 14 years old?

    3) What is the time limit guarantee?

    4) Is there a shipping out of USA?

Sorry for all these questions and thank you in advance!

Firstly let me say a big thank you for your comment and to answer your first question itIS specifically designed for people with a bad back. Most rowing machines are low to the ground but the Concept 2 is tall for one of these pieces of apparatus! It is actually around the same height as a normal chair so you should have absolutely no problems getting on and off it at all.

For this reason, I would go with the model E as the model D is much much lower than this one as this was taken into account whilst they upgraded it. I have said the length of time for parts and labour etc etc in the review.

Long warranty of 2 years and 5 years on a vast majority of the parts. And with regards to shipping all I am aware of is that it does certainly NOT ship to the UK.

Where are you based and I will gladly find out for you, no problem madam. The Model D is covered by a limited 5-year warranty on the frame and 2-year warranty on the PM and moving parts. The frame on the model E is for 2 or 5 years. It will last 5 so I would suggest this one. They have built a product that is easy to repair for the at-home user.

So if any issues come up after the warranty expires, spare parts are both affordable and easy to install.I am still looking for that shipping info for you Daniella, I will contact you!

      Men use the following formula:
      Calories Burned = [(Age x 0.2017) – (Weight x 0.09036) + (Heart Rate x 0.6309) – 55.0969] x Time / 4.184.
      Women use the following formula:
      Calories Burned = [(Age x 0.074) – (Weight x 0.05741) + (Heart Rate x 0.4472) – 20.4022] x Time / 4.184.
